Gold is the new favourite colour for girls on the Winnipeg Magic AA Tween ringette squad.

The team, which features three players from the Interlake, took first place in the 20th annual Jim Benning Invitational Tournament held in Regina Jan. 2 4.

Defender Hailey Grayson, 13, of Stonewall; centre Toni Thomson, 13, of Stonewall and 13 year old goalie Chelsea McNabb of Warren helped their teammates to a thrilling 5 4 overtime win over the Bonivital Angels to take the title.

McNabb’s father, Ray, watched the team play in Regina and says he’s proud of how well the girls did, and added that watching his daughter block a barrage of shots in overtime to get the win couldn’t have been a better experience.

“As a goalie dad it’s kind of nice to see my girl with a big smile on her face,” he laughed. “It was back to back action the whole game, and all in all it was very exciting weekend of ringette.”

The Magic consist of players from around the north end of Winnipeg’s Perimeter Highway, including West and East St. Paul, the Interlake and McDonald and North Winnipeg.

The gold medal performance in Regina marks the second in a row for the Magic, who also placed first in the Bernadette Price Memorial Tournament held in Saskatoon Nov. 7 9, 2008.
