the north face black jacket Blue Hill group studying microplastics’ effect on ocean

BLUE HILL, Maine It’s no secret that plastic trash such as bags, Styrofoam, packaging material and other items are landing in the ocean, but researchers in Blue Hill are beginning to monitor another type of plastic pollution they say could be a disaster for marine life.

Microplastics are pieces of debris smaller than 5 millimeters in diameter. The Marine Environmental Research Institute, or MERI, is launching a pilot program this month to monitor the amount of microplastics in Blue Hill Bay.

While microplastics can contaminate water through fragmentation of larger plastic items or spillage of raw plastic powders and pellets, recent studies suggest that microplastics from everyday products such as fleece and the “micro scrubbers” in face washes, toothpastes and home cleaners are going down our drains and ending up in the ocean.

MERI says plastic is a point source for toxic pollution because it soaks up dangerous chemicals such as flame retardants and polycholorinated biphenyl, or PCBs. MERI’s founder, director and principal scientist, Susan Shaw, has spent years studying those chemicals and said they can suppress the immune system and cause cancer and endocrine disruption.

Microplastics carry these toxins all the way up the food chain from phytoplankton to harbor seals, Shaw said.

Veronica Young, a MERI spokeswoman, put it a little more pointedly:

“‘Better living through chemistry’ started in the ’50s,” she said. “Now we’re paying the price.”

The fleece connection

According to a study published last year in Environmental Science and Technology, sewage containing fibers shed during the wash cycle might be an important source of microplastics. Experiments showed that a single garment can produce more than 1,900 microplastic fibers per wash.

Browne and several colleagues tested 18 beaches on six continents and found that each one contained microplastics. Eighty percent of those samples were polyester or acrylic, though it was impossible to determine exactly what kind of fabric was the source of the stray fibers. Bean, one kind of synthetic fabric is nearly ubiquitous: Fleece.

“Polarfleece” was invented in the 1970s by Malden Mills Industries Inc. of Lawrence, Mass., now known as Polartec. Bean and The North Face. military.

The release of Browne’s study in fall of 2011 spurred a flurry of media coverage about the threat fleece posed to the world’s oceans.

Nate Simmons, a spokesman for Polartec, said that the company takes concerns about microplastic pollution “very seriously” but was quick to point out that fleece is only a small slice of the polyester pie.

“Fleece is a huge industry and in Maine it’s an incredibly popular product,” he said. “But it’s probably only a microfraction of 1 percent of all the polyester in the world. It may be a contributor, but I think it’s kind of reckless to point your finger at fleece when there are millions of different products in the market that are made from that fabric.”

Simmons said that while Polartec can’t control what happens in the washing machines of consumers, it is conducting a study of the effluent at its Lawrence, Mass., production facility and will compare its discharge to the effluent already in the sewer system.

He also reiterated Polartec’s dedication to using recyclable materials whenever possible. Much of the company’s fleece is created from plastic derived from recycled water bottles, he said.

“We’re looking at everything we can do to minimize this issue on our end, where we have some control,” he said. “I think it’s probably more washing machines than it is manufacturing.”

It’s possible that washing machines could be outfitted with filtration systems to keep microfibers out of waste water systems but Simmons said such dense filters could mean longer wait times for washers to drain.

In response to questions about whether the home appliance industry has made any efforts to reduce possible microplastic pollution, Jill Notini, vice president of communications at the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, provided the following statement:

“AHAM and its member companies have a long history of environmental and energy improvements in home appliances. We take all reports about our products seriously, and from what we have read, experts in this area concur that little research in this area exists and much more research is needed to make any factual conclusion about microplastics from clothes washing.”

Efforts in Blue Hill

Neither the state’s Department of Marine Resources nor the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration monitor the microplastic content of the ocean, and MERI said it’s the first lab in the state to launch a monitoring program.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Protection said the agency is aware of emerging research on microplastic, but has yet to begin any work related to the pollutant.

“At this stage, this is really a research issue, and not a regulatory issue, which would bring us to the table,” wrote the DEP’s Samantha DePoy Warren in an email on Friday. “We’ll continue to follow the science being developed by those like MERI and its relevance to our agency’s role.”

The addition of microplastics to MERI’s repertoire of water quality indicators coincides with the group’s launch of its Stop Toxic Ocean Pollution, or STOP, campaign. The group is doubling down on education and advocacy work in an effort to limit ocean pollution.

The two efforts are related, said Shaw, the group’s president. Plastic, after all, is easier for consumers to wrap their heads around than toxins with unwieldy names such as “Decabromodiphenyl ether.”

(For the record: That’s a flame retardant chemical applied to mattresses and other furniture which MERI and other organizations successfully lobbied the Maine Legislature to ban in 2007 because of the threat it posed to children and wildlife.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will turn to veteran CFL backup quarterback Dan LeFevour as they try one last time to nail down second place and a home playoff game in Calgary, Friday.

With No. 1 quarterback Matt Nichols out with a suspected calf injury, LeFevour, the third stringer and short yardage specialist all season, gets the call over No. 2 Dom Davis.

“Play last game, experience, overall CFL game experience, the type of game we’re probably going to play, the style of game it’s going to be,” head coach Mike O’Shea said, Wednesday. “You look at what the weather conditions are going to be like, it’s going to be a bit of a mudder type of game.”

The Calgary forecast calls for snow and cold.

“Incompletions, interceptions you name it,

” LeFevour said. “We can probably agree on what we didn’t like, can’t we?”

Getting right back at it at least provides a chance for the 30 year old journeyman to make amends.

This will be just his eighth regular season start in six seasons with Hamilton, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg.

His record is 2 5.

“It’s going to be exciting,” LeFevour said. “Got a little taste of the weather today with some snow and some of the elements. It’s been a good week to prepare. I’ve been here five months, so this time’s as good as any to get out there and play.”

Losers of three of their last four, the Bombers aren’t exactly peaking at the right time, with the playoffs just around the corner.

Knowing the importance of entering the post season on a high, not to mention holding home field advantage for the West semifinal in 11 days, O’Shea says running back Andrew Harris will play, despite being knocked out of Saturday’s loss with an apparent head injury.

“Him playing gives us the best opportunity to win the game,” O’Shea said. “It’d be good to get a win. There is a certain feeling that comes with winning. It’s very hard to describe in that locker room. Each player would describe it differently, probably,

On March 25th, North Dakota became the 22nd state to pass a Blue Alert in to law. Twenty three states currently use it.

It’s designed to provide the public information about criminals on the run believed to be responsible for seriously injuring or killing a law enforcement officer. Like an Amber Alert,

President Barack Obama also signed a national version of a Blue Alert in to law this week after a bill passed with bi partisan Congressional support in Washington.

The Justice Department will be responsible for creating a national alert system. At the bill signing, the president spoke about another key component to Blue Alerts, as imminent threats to police officers will also be broadcast.

“(It) prevents the possibility that other officers may be caught by surprise and it ensures that appropriate steps can be taken as quickly as possible,” Obama said.

The bill, aimed at protecting the nation’s 900,000 plus peace officers, was so largely uncontested in Congress it passed both houses with a voice vote. Most mobile devices will automatically receive any alert.

After suffering from depression since she was 27, including postnatal depression following the birth of her first child, Cat Sims has launched a Hot For Mental Health campaign.

Through completing five hot yoga sessions in one day on April 26 at the Hot Yoga House in Eastecote, Cat, 36, hopes to raise awareness of mental health issues around motherhood and pregnancy and, hopefully, raise money for London charity, Cocoon Family Support.

Cat, who lives in Harrow with her two children Billie, 4, and Bo, 18 months (pictured below), began blogging about her experience as a mum when her first born was eight months.

“It honestly felt a little bit like I’d been punched in the face,” she explains. “I was completely overwhelmed and at the time there wasn’t quite enough honesty about how overwhelming it can be.

“You are given this human to keep alive, and you have to do it with your boobs. I found it really overwhelming. This inspired me to break down the boundaries and be really open and pull back the curtain on mental health issues to do with motherhood and parenting because I’m not saying that postnatal depression is harder than any other kind of depression I think there are extra layers of guilt that come with it.”

Cat has always sought to be very honest with her blog about the highs and lows of pregnancy and motherhood. She tells me: “The response to that has always been huge. It definitely gets traction because people want to talk about it.”

One of the things Cat struggled with was breastfeeding. When she finally decided to switch to bottled formula, despite being “made to feel like it was a combination of cocaine, tequila and dung beetles”, she sobbed and continued to feel horrendously judged by her health visitor.

“At that moment I knew it was ridiculous and that we needed to get rid of this dialogue. It needs to be more honest and it has to have the parents in mind. These babies are pretty resilient and if you’re miserable then nobody is having a good time.

It’s physically impossible for the lower asymmetrically damaged part of the building to have naturally progressively collapsed in any way that could result in the upper part of the building actually accelerating as it descended symmetrically straight down through itself as a single unit through the path of maximum resistance (below right), and then, driven on solely by gravity, actually continue to accelerate so nearly to gravitational acceleration (below left) as to require very careful calculation for any difference between the two to be detected.

Some other force powerful enough to quickly remove all support from beneath the upper part of the building as it descended must be introduced to explain the observed rate of descent during the 2.25 second period of gravitational acceleration. For the 2.25 seconds that the building literally fell at gravitational acceleration, no other force powerful enough to quickly remove all support from beneath the upper part of the building was seen to be introduced from outside the building, and no other force powerful enough to quickly remove all support from beneath the upper part of the building is known to have existed inside the building as an element or normal function of it’s infrastructure. For a load supported by a column to descend at gravitational acceleration, all support must be quickly removed, there’s absolutely no other way. It must be knocked out, pulled out, blown out, vaporized etc. Since no eight story tall boulders were seen rumbling through Manhatten that day that could have quickly knocked out all support. Some energetic material powerful enough to quickly remove all support from beneath the upper part of the building during the 105 foot 2.25 second period of gravitational acceleration must have been physically transported inside the building some time before the event, it had to be brought in. The explosion model is the only one.

The empirically established fact that WTC7 was brought down by explosives immediately shines a bright spotlight on literally the only ones on the planet that could possibly have carried out a covert domestic operation of that magnitude in that building (and by extension all the events of that day). the only ones who had exclusive 24/7 access to all parts of the highly secured building. the only ones who had ready access to the quantity and quality of energetic materials required. and the only ones who could have defeated the high level security of the building in order to allow in those with the required expertise in the effective use of said energetic materials. The fact is that only the Department of Defense/Central Intelligence Agency could’ve done it. And just as one needn’t be Isaac Newton to see there is no other possible explanation for the behavior of WTC7 other than energetic materials having been physically transported inside the building, one needn’t be Sherlock Holmes to see there is no other possible explanation as to who could have done it since the building was in perpetual lock down for many years as a highly secured government facility. it’s elementary.

If you are getting ready to bet on a San Diego Chargers comeback in week six after losing on the road to the New Orleans Saints in week five, then you may want to think about it first. The Chargers were not blown out in the

game, but the San Diego defense was unable to stop Drew Brees and the Saints offense while the Chargers offense had all kinds of problems against the New Orleans defense. The problem that San Diego will run into in week six is that the Denver Broncos play a similar game to the Saints.

are starting to see the zip and accuracy in Manning s throws that they are used to seeing. The problem that Peyton Manning was having was that he and his receivers were not in sync when it came to changes in plays at the line and

running patterns. It looks like Manning and his receivers are working out the kinks and the Denver offense is looking just as exciting as the Colts offense did for over a decade. There is a lot more to this Denver team than just Peyton Manning and the Chargers will find that out on Monday night.

Any of the price per head bookie experts that watched the game between the Chargers and Saints could see the problems that San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers and his receivers were having with the speedy Saints defensive backs. The Denver secondary, anchored by cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Tracy Porter, is a much

more aggressive and experienced secondary that will keep things very tight for San Diego. That means that the Chargers will have to turn to Ryan Mathews and the running game, which has not worked out this season either.

Peyton Manning inherited a Denver team with a young offense, an established defense and a reliable special teams unit. The 5 dimes reviews on the Broncos for 2011 kept saying that all the team needed was a

quarterback to be a Super Bowl contender. Fans forget that a new quarterback usually means a new offensive system. Now that it looks like Peyton Manning and the offense is getting on track, that means that the defense can get much more aggressive at shutting down the opposing offense. It all spells bad things for

The Miami Dolphins are really not a bad football team. The online sports book experts have Miami as underdogs to the Cincinnati Bengals in week five, and that is understandable. But anyone who has been watching the Dolphins can see the rapid development of rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the way that his confidence increases with each week. The only thing that the football betting experts cannot help but notice is how much the Dolphins offense misses a veteran wide receiver that can get open and help make plays. The release of

Chad Johnson may have been a good moral move, but it is an obvious stumbling block to the progress of the Miami team.

The Cincinnati Bengals are battling for the top spot in the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens despite the fact that the Bengals have given up more points than any other team in the AFC North. Green. The Bengals really are building a quality offense in Cincinnati, but the defense is having a hard time keeping pace and that could hurt the Bengals later in the season.

The bookmaker betting software can sometimes take time to adjust to a team that is improving. The Miami Dolphins put up 21 points on what is turning out to be a very good Arizona defense in week four. Not only that, but Ryan Tannehill struck for 431 passing yards and a touchdown in that game as well. If the Dolphins can get Reggie Bush to start running at the pace he was running at when the season first started, then Miami could have a two pronged attack that many defenses would have problems with. The Miami defense is still a work in progress but that too is improving from week to week.

Before the 2012 NFL season started, the betting world expected the San Francisco 49ers to run away with the NFC West. New St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher was expected to take a couple of years to turn the Rams into a playoff team and the Seahawks dropped off everyones radar when it decided to start a rookie

quarterback. Three weeks later, the 49ers have shown signs of being beatable, the Arizona Cardinals are in first place and the Seattle Seahawks may have something with its new rookie quarterback. As for the St. Louis Rams, things are changing but the change is slow.

One of the players that seems to be benefitting the most from Jeff Fisher s coaching style is Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. The online sports betting experts have noticed that Bradford is more patient,
the north face snow boots Blog The Sports Betting Blog

and confident in the pocket this season. As a result of Bradford s new found confidence, the Rams are scoring points on a regular basis. The problem is that football is a team game and the defensive side of the Rams

team is still not holding up its end of the bargain. The sooner Fisher can address the defensive issues, the sooner St. Louis can compete for a playoff spot.

The Seahawks have rookie quarterback Russell Wilson in the pocket and veteran running back Marshawn Lynch causing all kinds of havoc out of the backfield. The sport betting experts are not ready to crown the Seahawks yet, but the experts will remind everyone that Seattle has a pretty good defense. There are a lot more weapons on both sides of the ball for the Seattle Seahawks this season than last season. With the confidence that the team is developing in Russell Wilson, this Seattle team could be one to be reckoned with in 2012.

A 5 dimes review of the St. Louis roster shows that there were some pieces there that could be molded into a good

team by the right coach. Bradford has a young corps of receivers and veteran running back Stephen Jackson has been an anchor for the team for years. But the Rams have had problems in the defensive secondary and with the pass rush for many years now, and those problems still need to be addressed. Right now, the Rams can stay in games against teams where St. Louis can survive a shootout in regulation. With the way the Seattle defense has been playing lately, a shootout may not be in the cards for the Rams in this game.

The season does not get any easier for the Kansas City Chiefs as the team heads to New Orleans to take on the Saints in week three. The online sports book experts were not surprised that the Atlanta Falcons blew out the Chiefs in the Kansas City home opener, but the lopsided loss to the Buffalo Bills on the road was a little surprising.

The Chiefs have now been blown out in two consecutive home openers and Kansas City has suffered huge losses at the hands of the Bills for two seasons in a row. Absolutely nothing seemed to be going right for the Chiefs in Buffalo, and that is a dangerous pattern to continue as Kansas City faces a desperate New Orleans

The Saints have started the season 0 2, and just about every online football betting expert is pointing at the season long suspension of Saints’ head coach Sean Payton as the culprit. The team is playing well, but not well enough to win games. In week two against the Panthers, the New Orleans offensive line was battered and

beaten and allowed quarterback Drew Brees to get battered and beaten as well. Without Payton, the Saints do not have the ability to close out teams like it used to have and it is doubtful that things will improve much over the next few weeks.

The bookmaker betting software experts noticed that Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles did not play very much in the Buffalo game. While the Chiefs try to downplay it as just a matter of the flow of the game requiring more passing and less Charles, the general consensus is that Charles is injured again and that

would leave the Chiefs without a running game. The Chiefs’ defense also had problems containing the Buffalo running game, which does not set Kansas City up very well to face this powerful New Orleans running attack.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are injured across the offensive line and have key injuries at the running back position. Pittsburgh also had to play its first game of the season without injured linebacker James Harrison. Despite all of the

problems the Pittsburgh Steelers are having this season, the online football betting world still considers the Steelers to be a far superior team on both sides of the ball to the Buffalo Bills. The New York Jets are going to find that beating a weak Buffalo team at home is nothing compared to trying to play a determined Pittsburgh team on the road.

There are dozens of great web browsers available for Android, depending on the features you’re looking for. Whether it’s syncing with your desktop, or super speedy browsing, or support for flash navigation, you have options galore some of them poppar, others not so much. This week we’re going to look at five of the best Android browsers, based on your nominations.

Earlier in the week, we asked you which Android browser you thought was the best. We tallied your nominations, and while there are plenty to choose from, we only have room for the top five.

Firefox for Android has come a long way since its days in beta. It’s fast, it’s free, it fply supports Firefox Sync, so if you use Firefox on the desktop, it’ll bring in your bookmarks and passwords. It’s the first mobile browser to trpy support Do Not Track, and the “Awesome Page” start screen that shows you all of your recently visited tabs helps you get right back to what you were doing if you had to put your phone down. It even supports add ons and Personas, although there aren’t too many of them yet. A few more options, and Firefox wopd be a good contender for our favorite, but it’s clearly already one of yours, and for good reason. If you are running ICS or Jelly Bean on your device, Chrome for Android is a must download. It supports Incognito Mode browsing, bookmark syncing via Chrome Sync, and in its most recent updates, now supports search syncing, tab syncing, and more anything that Chrome can sync on your desktop will be right there waiting for you on your Android device. Chrome for Android is also optimized for mobile, meaning it’s blazing fast. The only downside is that Google hasn’t made it available for phones running Gingerbread or tablets stuck with Honeycomb.

Dolphin Browser is our favorite web browser for Android, and for good reason. Dolphin’s options and tools are unparalleled, even when compared to the big name browsers, supports dozens of third party plug ins and tools to extend its features, has built in speech to text thanks to Dolphin Sonar, supports on screen gestures to open bookmarks and navigate around pages, and comes in two flavors: the “HD” version for phones that can handle all of its features, and a “Mini” version for device owners who want speed and snappy performance over options. Even if you gravitate to one of the big names, Dolphin is worth at least trying.

Back in the early days of Android, one of the first browsers to challenge the stock browser was a now vanished app called Miren. Miren was a great and feature rich browser, but for reasons unknown, it’s tough to find these days. If you liked Miren, Boat Browser is its spiritual successor. Fast, lightweight, and completely free, Boat is intuitive, supports add ons, and has a powerfp voice control engine (so you can say “Facebook” and the browser will bring up Facebook for you). You can even skin and theme the UI if you like, customize the speed dial start page with your favorite sites, and more. If your phone can’t handle the fpl version or you just want a lighter app (which is hard to believe), Boat Mini is there for you.

If you’re a fan of Opera on the desktop, Opera Mobile will suit you perfectly. Opera Mobile supports Opera Link, so you can sync your bookmarks, speed dial, and other user preferences with your desktop Opera install. Aside from that, Opera Mobile is fast, free, and goes out of its way to compress data in the background so you can browse your favorite sites without blowing past your wireless carrier’s data caps. Opera even has its own mini app store, fpl of third party add ons that improve the browser or games that make it more fun to use. Have an older device? Opera Mini might be a better choice you get most of the features, but even more speed.

There you have it: your picks for the five best web browsers available for Android. Now it’s time to decide which one is the best overall.

This week’s honorable mention goes out to the stock Android browser: the one that ships on most phones pre Ice Cream Sandwich. It varies from OEM to OEM, but many of you said that you just didn’t need to download another browser, and the one that came with your phone is good enough for you. That’s fair, but we’re looking at alternatives here!

Have something to say about one of the contenders? Want to make the case for your favorite keyboard, even if it wasn’t included in the list? Remember, the top five are based on your most poppar nominations from the call for contenders thread from earlier in the week. Make your case for your favorite or alternative in the discussions below.

Oman has become the third country in the region to introduce the 4G LTE Mobile Broadband Network as Omantel launched the first such value packed generation next network. Switched On: Android’s TV Triple Threat

Just two years ago, Google TV paved a way for Android to enter the television via integrated sets, Blu ray players, dedicated TV add ons and pay TV set top devices. For now, the product may almost be as much of a hobby for the purveyor of questionable eyewear as Apple TV is for Apple, Google’s mobile OS competitor. But it’s clear that the platform isn’t all things to all couch potatoes; the last several weeks have seen the launch of two new, contrasting approaches to getting Android on the big screen in the home.

And then, of course, there is the competition that all smart A/V products face from the growing influence of tablets and smartphones in the living room that can “throw” apps and video up to the TV. Still, a look at the (now) three key Android on TV initiatives shows an uneven landscape in the mad race to educate consumers that have traditionally been unaware of the OS’ big screen potential.

The problem with smart TV, some say, is that people don’t really want apps on their televisions, but the entire home console business serves as evidence to refute that. The basic business plan of Ouya seems to be, “Give away the razors, give away the blades and let a community develop their own way to shave.” The small, $99 disc less game console that broke the record for first day funding and is poised to become the most funded Kickstarter project requires developers to offer a free to play version of their games. It also provides a standard controller for overcoming the lack of practical touchscreen capability on the television, especially for certain game types.

The key question facing this wopd be disruptor is whether the kinds of casual games that became poppar on smartphones and which have become more compelling on tablets can compete for space, money and attention in the living room not only against the triple A titles from major console vendors, but from casual games springing up on integrated smart TV app decks.

the north face duffel bag blocks extra point to survive Lutheran North in Class 2 semifinal

Junior defensive back Dylan Hill blocked the game tying point after kick with 7 minutes and 9 seconds remaining in regulation to give Lamar a 7 6 win over Lutheran North in a semifinal Saturday at LaMothe Field on the campus of Lutheran North.

The No. Friday at Faurot Field in Columbia.

“For me, what I believe and what I enjoy, this is football. This is the type of football I enjoy,” Bailey said. “It was a tight, close game to the end and either team could have won it.”

The No. 3 team in Class 2 and the No. Lamar’s six consecutive championships are a state record. It has won 10 consecutive district titles. Saturday was its ninth consecutive semifinal.

And it was wounded. Starting running back Michael Danner did not play after suffering an injury in Lamar’s quarterfinal win over Ava. Three time champion quarterback Stuart McKarus did not suit up, either.

“We had a lot more guys today playing on both sides of the ball than we have previously due to injury,” Bailey said. “We just told them, we don’t have a choice. We have to have guys step up and play and you’re the best we’ve got.”

On a field filled with standouts, none made a bigger impact than Lamar running back and defensive end Cooper Lucas. The 5 foot 11 and 210 pound Lucas scored the game’s first touchdown when he broke through the right side of the line and rolled for a 45 yard touchdown with 8:50 remaining.

He finished with 102 yards on 14 carries.

“I tripped, then I saw the hole and I just hit it,” Lucas said.

Junior Duncan Gepner carried 22 times for 75 yards. He attempted one pass that was batted down at the line.

Lucas spent much of his afternoon in Lutheran North’s backfield. The Crusaders made their hay all season with a power rushing attack that relied on speed, deception and toughness.

Lucas chased down their stable of running backs like he was calf roping. He finished with four tackles for loss.

“They dominated us up front. They posed a lot of problems for us. Their defensive tackles dominated the game,” said Reed,

Lutheran North’s coach. “We’ve been controlling the line of scrimmage all year, but today they controlled it and that was the difference.”

Lutheran North gave itself a chance when junior quarterback Josh Hopkins faked a handoff and boot legged to the right side. With the defense swaying to the left he raced 30 yards for the touchdown that made it 7 6 with 7:09 to play.

The Tigers hadn’t been in such a pressure packed situation this season but put their attention on the next play.

“We’ve talked about it all year,” senior defensive end TW Ayers said. “We’re all mad they scored on us, but we have to flush that and go to try and block that play. That can make the difference in a game.”

The snap wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t perfect. It allowed Hill to break around the right side and block senior Tim Branneky’s kick.

“We practice that and knew we had to block it, we had to,” Lucas said. “We had to stay on top.”

Lutheran North had one more chance. It forced Lamar to punt on fourth and 4 at its own 48. Lucas, the punter, couldn’t catch the snap cleanly, scrambled to pick up the loose ball and was taken down for a 4 yard loss with 3:53 remaining.

Lutheran North picked up one first down but faced fourth and 3 at the Lamar 24 with 59.7 seconds to play.

Senior running back Canaan Brooks went into the heart of the line for a 1 yard gain.

Lamar found a way to play one more day.

“It was a fun game to play in,” Ayers said. “This is the kind of game you dream about, just pounding it out on the line. Whoever blocks and tackles the best is going to win the game.”

Lutheran North came up one play, one block,

one tackle short. It was devastating for a senior class that made this season a glorious one for the Crusaders and their fans. They won their first conference title since 2002. They played the first night game in school history. It took a historic opponent to bring it to an end.
